Puppies and the Mall

The Kelle Carrier
Pet Super Store

I have become quite the shopper recently. I am determined to get all Christmas presents at the best deal humanly possible which has led to coupon clipping, calculator spewing, and store jumping. I'm pretty happy with my conquests so far....yesterday I bought $200 of stuff at Macy's for a mere $80. Booya.

Since I have been frequenting the stores on a daily basis, I have been noticing a lot of people shopping with their dogs. Now, we all remember the days when Paris Hilton made shopping with a little pup a must have accessory...but most of the people I see are middle age women shopping with their dogs not in cute bags, but rather in big sturdy carrying cases. It made the whole thing see less silly and made me wonder, has it (more) socially acceptable to shop with your dog? (That entire sentence was oh-so-Carrie-Bradshaw-esque, but not on purpose.)

On one hand I can understand why people do it. As the proud mother of a 5 pound Yorkie I remember when I first got him HATING leaving him at home. I was always worried he would get hurt or sad, and he just seemed so damn fragile I often thought about sneaking him in my bag and taking him to my law school classes (I didn't). On the other hand, it seems a little silly to take your dog shopping with you. I mean its a DOG not an accessory.

What do you all think? Do any of you take your dog shopping with you? What do you think of people who do?

I don't get it. Seems like it would be a huge pain in the ass to carry around one of those cases. I don't even like carrying lots of shopping bags. I think the dog would have more fun sleeping at home than being dragged around the mall.

I've seen more and more dogs at stores lately. The worst was the huge slobbering lab I saw in JCrew. All I could think was "No, please don't slobber on all of those corduroys! I plan on buying those in a second!"

That said, I desperately want to take my puppy shopping. So far it's only been PetSmart, but I might sneak her in to at least Target someday.

Haha, I haven't seen this to the extent you talk about. I always thought dogs were not allowed in stores for the most part? Have the rules changed or is the economy so bad stores don't want to chase off customers?

i think it is better than leaving your dog in the car, but home might be an even better option and i agree with Maureen that the case looks awfully awkward to carry around--
