Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!

Currently it is Monday and I am battling with going to my only class that wasn't canceled this week (Tax). I know I SHOULD go since I really have nothing better to do, but I can't help but really really want to get my Thanksgiving holiday started early...

I have never been a huge fan of Thanksgiving. I mean I obviously am a fan of the break (obviously) and eating lots of food (OBVIOUSLY), but I have never really been able to revel in the concept of celebrating the stealing of land and desecration of a whole group of people. Either way. I like the break.

I think if I ever have to make Thanksgiving dinner (which GOD HELP YOU if you are a guest at that table), I would definitely contribute to the Adopt-A-Turkey program. I mean I would certainly still COOK a turkey (and probably burn it)- but I think that saving a turkey's life would definitely help balance out the universe. What the hell, I might even buy two.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Finally Get Him to Dust...

The other day I received a text from Dan that we had received a giant box from my friend (and bridesmaid) Thu in the mail. I quickly ran home to find inside the most BEAUTIFUL (and stylish!) clock EVER with our names and date of engagement engraved inside. It was so incredibly nice of her- but even better was what came next...

I know that you all know that Dan is a HUGE Laker fan, and he did not take their loss to Boston in the Finals last year well at all. Thu is from Boston and was very happy about her city's big win. Inside the box, perfectly wrapped, was a beautiful GREEN T-shirt with a Leprechaun saying "We Beat LA!" I thought it was very nice for Thu to think of Dan and send him his own separate gift. Dan did not think so.

The above picture is of Dan using the new t-shirt to dust our beautiful clock and I would like to send my thanks to Thu for finally getting Dan to dust.

American Girl

Me: If we ever have little girls we are taking them to the American Girl Doll Store in New York City. Its so cool. You can design a doll that looks just like you.

Dan: How about we skip having little girls and just take you to the store so that you can make a doll....since that's really what this is about.

Me: Deal.

Red Sole/Soul

I have a problem. My whole life I have tried very hard to be a sensible person in regard to fashion and style- but I get these weird obsessions with certain brands that consume me to the level if I CANT HAVE IT NOW life is not worth living.

But I think I might have pushed myself a little too far on this one.

I have never really been a shoe girl. While other girls have hundreds of shoes...I have chosen to focus my efforts elsewhere (like earrings). Leave it to Oprah to ruin my good sense. Weeks and weeks ago she did a show focusing on Christian Louboutin's shoes and NOW I AM OBSESSED. I recognize that most girls are gasping in shock that I am 24-years-old and have yet to discover this INSPIRED designer, but believe me...I long for the days when I did not want want WANT these shoes.

These shoes are not only beautiful in design, but they all have A RED SOLE! I mean seriously, given my obsession with all things red it is like THESE SHOES ARE MEANT FOR ME. Since I really need a new pair of black pumps for work...I think that dropping $600 on these beauties is totally justified.

Don't you think??????

More Fun Dog Things...

From the same website that brought you the amazing dog houses last week (Design Milk)- here are These Creatures Dog Bowls. I don't know how well it would work for people with big dogs (sorry Stephanie), but oh wow I want one for Toby. At first I couldn't decide between the one Yorkie or the squirrel ...but then I saw the price tag ($155) and realized that I will have to put that one on hold for awhile...

But still fun to look!

Things That Make Me Happy #2: Down and Feathers

Today's post is dedicated to the black circles under my eyes from lack of sleep.

Since I was little I have liked things that were soft, but I tragically did not discover my love for all things down until I was in college. While I spread out my flat, drab comforter on my springy, broken bed on the first day in the dorms, I watched in envy while my roommate placed down her feather bed topped with a fully down comforter and down pillows. At first I thought it was a bit excessive...but one day I laid down on her bed and OH MY GOD it was like I was transported into the sky and was sitting on a cloud. I could have fallen asleep right there- and I often did- because it was so wonderful.

Now I own my personal down comforters, pillows, and blankets. Things that I love. Things that make sleep like a baby. Things I NEED TO HAVE TO GET SLEEP. Currently I am sleeping on a king bed with no down. None at at. All because the person I may-or-may-not be sharing a bed with refuses to let me get down things that fit a King bed. My longing for down got so bad that I kept waking up in the middle of the night and crawling into my old bed to get a decent night's sleep. This person who I may-or-may-not live with finally lamented and agreed to let me buy a feather down mattress...but dear God it is not enough. If I don't get a down comforter soon I am going lose my ability to sleep completely.

But a peculiar thing happened when I bought the feather bed that I must share. I got two free feather pillows as well, which I assumed would be MINE since this person I may-or-may-not share a bed with claimed to hate down things. The next thing I know one of my pillows is stolen, and this person claims it is only "fair" to share the nice pillows.

Pretty sure this person also is beginning to realize the joys and wonders of down.

Anyways, as I was laying on my old bed tonight wishing that I could fall asleep in it, I realized that the second thing that definitely makes me happy is down. Hopefully I can become happier soon. And less sleep deprived.

***Editors Note: I have been informed by the person that I may-or-may-not share a bed with that this post seems to imply to an unsuspecting reader (who obviously does not understand my wit or charm) that I do not like sleeping in the same bed as the the person I may-or-may-not share a bed with. I assure my readership, this is not the case. And for my mother, don't worry I am totally sleeping alone.

Hands Free People

So WA recently passed a no cell phones while driving law...and apparently CA is doing the same? Either way, this video completely illustrates how I feel about the issue, and better yet I laughed the whole way through.

Den Haus

I subscribe to this great blog called DESIGN MILK that has amazing design ideas- but today's was jut to wonderful not to share with other dog lovers out there. Check out these amazing dog beds from Den Haus. Can't you just see Toby in one of these? Unfortunately they come with a pretty hefty price tag...sigh, someday.

And while I'm on the dog topic. I am currently watching the Jennifer Aniston Oprah, and she is prompting her new movie "Marley and Me." This is one of my all time favorite books, and if you love dogs it is a MUST READ (but make sure you have some Kleenex on hand).

Here's the trailor:

George Bush Talks About His Regrets

Whatever. I know I am supposed to hate George W. Bush...and while I still ready for him to leave office....I sure do want to go get a beer with him.

Don't Mess With a 1L and their Laptop

Oh wow- You have to check out THIS great article on a 1L law student who tried to beat the crap out of a guy who tried to steal his laptop.

Phone Conversation

Me: Toby is curling up next to the base heater again. Do you think that is safe?

Dan: Probably not.

Me: Ya, but he's a dog. I mean, wont he be able to sense if he gets too hot?

Dan: Melissa, he chewed through a cord that was electrocuting him and still didn't stop. Plus its the whole boiling frog syndrome.

Me: (Hang-up Phone panicing) TOBY GET AWAY FROM THE HEATER!

Things That Make Me Happy #1: Tapena Wine

Since the close of the election, I am having problems knowing what to do with myself. I really miss posting Sarah Palin's latest verbal blunder or Obama's current words of wisdom. In order to fill that void (and that massive happiness black hole that is law school and consequently a large part of my life), I have decided to add a new section to this blog entitled "Things That Make Me Happy." I think Oprah would so totally approve.

Since law school has driven me to drinking, the first "Thing That Makes Me Happy" is wine...but not any wine, on no, the wine, the BEST wine, TAPENA SPANISH WINE. This is a big deal for me since I normally drink (and tragically prefer) crap blush wines- but this wine is so amazing it can conquer even my tragically poor taste buds. I know, I know, what you are thinking. "Melissa, if you like such crap wine why would this wine be any good?" That is a fair question...but let me introduce you to my fiance. You could place 5 different wines in front of him and no matter what he will always prefer the most expensive....and even he, loves this wine.

I love this wine for numerous reasons.

First, I love the fork. I don't know why, but the fork really makes me happy. I like it so much it is my pet name for the wine. So much so that I ask waiters for "fork wine" and they look at my like I'm nutty.

Second, the description of the wine on the back of the bottle is BRILLIANT. I mean seriously, just read it posted above-doesn't it make you just want to DRINK THE WORDS? Their creative team deserves a major raise despite the current economic crisis.

Third, the taste is fantastic. The only way I can think of describing it is that it "ignites the taste buds." Not kidding.

Tragically, I have only found this wine at the Albertson's on 59th- which means I rarely get it. But that just makes the moments where I get the wine that much sweeter. Like now, while I sit here blogging and sipping Tapena as I watch Dan swear at the Wii because it wont connect to the intenet.

Ah, this is the life.

Too Cute

If I didn't know better- I would think this was Toby. Although Toby is more of a digger then a roller.

I found this great video on one of my new favorite blogs Cute Overload

Speaking of a cute overload

Its a New Day!- The Song :)

Will.I.Am premiered his new song "Its a New Day" on Oprah today and I love it! We keep joking that Oprah has treated this week as "Obama Week"- but in a way I guess that's pretty accurate.

The Big Speeches

McCain's Concession Speech

Barack Obama Victory Speech

Not a Perfect Day

This morning I woke up and thought to myself “it is a new day!” And in many ways it is a new day. This county has a new president-elect and a mandate for change in this county. We have elected the first African-American president, and have said to the world that no matter what race you are, anything is possible.

But I am still sad.

In this midst of all this talk about change and reforming our county, last night our country took a GIANT step backward in California, Arizona, and Arkansas. CA and AZ both passed bans on gay marriage and Arkansas passed a ban on gay adoption. It makes me literally sick to my stomach to think that these states have written into their constitutions such hateful provisions. It makes me even sicker to think of all the children out there who are being denied loving and responsible parents because of the moral bigotry of others.

It’s a big day for America, but obviously there is still a lot of work to do.

Its a New Day!

OBAMA WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Election Center

Currently I am sitting in a room with 3 TV's and 3 laptops tracking the race. We also have a "shit list" - which is a list of cable news (MSNBC, FOX, and CNN) that CALL a race and then have to take it back because they call too early (here's looking at you MSNBC who likes to call races with 0% of precincts reporting.)

Current Totals:
FOX -1
CNN +1 (Note: We considered giving them a -1 because Gergen's hairstylists sucks...but decided against it.)
